           MEL Technology Assures Safe Travel by Rail

wenglor subsidiary MEL Mikroelektronik GmbH has impressively confirmed its technology leadership in the field of laser scanners: as of this year, the new M2-GL series is providing for safety on the world’s second largest railway network in Russia. Germany’s largest railway enterprise, Deutsche Bahn AG, is currently bringing its measuring equipment up to date through the use of the M2-GL scanner series, thus making it possible to conduct their own measuring analyses on German and Austrian track. Infotrans, a large, leading Russian manufacturer of diagnostic track measuring equipment is transforming its second locomotive into a unique diagnostics complex with up to ten M2-GL scanners, in order to be able to reliably monitor Russia’s railway system with more than 85,000 kilometers of track. At speeds of up to 200 km per hour, the high-precision laser scanners detect even the finest cracks and bumps in the cross-profiles of the track – accurate down to the micron. The great challenge is to obtain reliable, stable measured values despite extreme cold in the winter and extreme heat in the summer, as well as contamination, both reflective and matte surfaces and bright sunlight. During a visit paid by an Infotrans delegation to wenglor headquarters, Infotrans managing director Igor Mikhalkin confirmed the strong collaboration between the two companies and examined wenglor’s technological highlights for himself.
